Southport 9 Chester 7 Short Match.

The heat wave had long gone as rain and cloud lasted all day. Umbrellas were up and down as Southport succeeded.

Giving 21 bisque over all it was a good team effort to win.

It was nice to welcome Bill Nicholl back to playing as he has rejoined the club.

The rest of the team was Derek Lunt, Barbara and John Haslam. 

We are now top of the league (for the moment)!!

Eight contestants all enjoyed single banking on the Old Lawns; made possible by the facilities at the North Lawns providing excellent courts for any members wishing to dare the blazing Mid-day Sunshine during the weekend. 

Playing in the rather tricky conditions of faster than usual lawns and rock solid hoop setting was a treat for everyone although, due to this, not many games finished quickly. 

The manager, John Haslem, set up two blocks which produced Semi Final Sunday. In the morning Dennis Scarr and Brian Medley were both beaten in tense time turns by Neil Adams and Charles Harding. 

The final was a fascinating match between the rapidly improving Neil and the cool experience of Charles. The ‘royal box’ was full to capacity with members and visitors watching proceedings.

In presenting the trophy, Brian Lewis the Chairman of S & B CC made reference to the club’s commitment for holding this important and long standing event. We were all pleased to hear this and have our fingers crossed that this and many other tournaments will bounce back in 2023 following the pandemic years.

The team of Mike Armstrong, Eddie Green and Sue Wilkie put up a good battle against a much stronger Bowdon side and to their credit only lost by 13 – 5 which has inspired them to hope for a better result next time they meet

Level Play Golf 10^th May 2022 Bury North V Southport, Team Terry Dunbar, Eddie Green and Sue Wilkie. Not sure what to expect up to lunch we were 6-4 down, the weather did not help it poured down wet weather gear on then off.

After lunch the tide turned we pulled back the result, and the final score Southport  10  Bury North 8,

Great game and a good start for the Level Play games to follow.

The 8th May 2022, GC team Terry Dunbar, Eddie Green, Sue Wilkie and Paul Greenwood. The team started off to  a flying start winning both doubles matches. The team played to a high standard shown by the score line of Southport 13  V Chester 5A Great result for Southport

GC Game 28^TH April Bowdon v Southport

Team Terry Dunbar, Tina Kelly, Eddie Green and Frank Melling.

Southport had a poor start losing both our double games, by lunch time we were 6-4 down, not looking good.

After lunch we pulled it back, score line going into our last game It was all on Frank he needed to win to give us a draw. Frank pulled it out the bag with a comfortable win  6 – 0 giving Southport a draw.

This was fantastic 2 new players, and both keen to get on with the next game.

Richard Harding was undefeated in Southport’s season opener on 23-24 April, and won the Jubilee Tankard for the first time.
Covid infections brought the entry down to seven – Richard beat all 6 of his opponents, including doing the events only triple peel against his namesake Charles Harding.

The lawns manager ( Terry Dunbar ) has today said that the South lawns are now marked out and so are now open for play

Around 60 of our members turned up for the Start of Season get together on 3rd April

The weather was a bit chilly but everyone joined in and there was loads of play on the north lawns ( PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SOUTH LAWNS WILL BE OPEN SOON )

Esther had a few words to say and then everyone tucked in to cake and a glass of fizz

all in all it is a promising start to the season
